The Sneetches and Other Stories Book Review

9/14/2014

This has to be one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books. The story unfolds with two types of Sneetches: those with stars on their bellies and those without. The Sneetches with the stars feel that they are better than those without. Until one day, the starless Sneetches find a way to obtain the tummy star and turn the Sneetch world upside down.

Dr. Seuss presents the adult topics of cliques, jealousy and the need to belong in such a beautifylly simplistic way that children of all ages will easily be able to understand. The illustrations are wonderful, as always. In fact, I think that businesses should incorporate this story into their employee handbooks and manuals!

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs Book Review

9/14/2014

I will never forget the day that my grade school teacher read this book to the class. I remember thinking, "That's not the real story!" But, as she continued, I really began to love the interpretation.

"The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" is supposedly the "true" story of the three little pigs as told by none other than the wolf. This is the first book to ever turn the tables and allow the antagonist to tell his/her side of the story. Of course the wolf blames all of his huffing and puffing on allergies that are only aggravated by his neighbors, the pigs.

With comical illustrations and humorous storytelling, this book is sure to become a children's classic for years to come.

Skippyjon Jones Book Review

I absolutely LOVE Skippyjon Jones! Probably because I am the proud dog mom of three beautiful Chihuahuas.

In Judy Schachner's debut, we meet Skippyjon Jones, a Siamese cat who thinks he is a Chihuahua. His momma is constantly trying to teach him how to be a proper cat, but, Skippyjon would rather spend his days pretending.

While playing in his room, Skippyjon manages to bounce from his bed into his closet. Once inside, he is transported to a magical world filled with Chihuahuas that need his help. Can Skippyjon save the day?

I remember falling in love with Skippyjon and sharing this story with a kids club that I visit with my therapy dog. The children laughed the entire time. Skippyjon is a fun character that children and adults of all ages will love.

A Very Scary Witch Story Book Review

This is one of my favorite children's books of all time! I remember getting so excited around Halloween because that is when my parents would read this story to me. And when I got old enough to read it myself, I hardly put it down the entire month of October!

"A Very Scary Witch Story" is the tale of a young witch who is afraid of Halloween! She worries that she will not be scary enough to carry out her responsibilities as a witch. Soon, she is flying high atop a magic broom with her trusty black cat at the helm.

I loved turning off the lights and looking at the glow-in-the-dark pictures! Plus, as a person who does not like scary movies, I really loved the fact that there are fun Halloween stories out there for young and old alike to enjoy.

Nightsong Book Review

SPOILER ALERT: The full plot of "Nightsong" will be revealed.

"Nightsong" is a fantastic story about a young bat who learns how to see the world around him.

Chiro (cheer-o)is called by his mother and told that the time has come for him to go out into the world. He is very afraid, but, his mother tells him to use "good sense." Confused, Chiro asks what this means.

"Sense is the song you sing out into the world, and the song the world sings back to you. Sing, and the world will answer. That is how you'll see," she informs him.

With this, his mother lets him go and Chiro flies out into the night. Shadows loom everywhere and Chiro is having a hard time seeing the path the he is supposed to take. That is when Chiro begins to sing.

As Chiro sings, the world around him becomes visible. He is able to see things that he has never seen before, such as a flock of flying geese. Chiro manages to find the pond that his mother has instructed him to eat at.

But, Chiro desires to see more. He flies higher than ever and discovers truly amazing sights. As the sun begins to rise, Chiro realizes that he needs to head back home. He returns to his mother tired, but, happy for the new knowledge that he has gained. Now, Chiro has found his nightsong that will continue to help him see the world.

This book is absolutely stunning! What a wonderful way to explain echolocation to children (and adults). I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Chiro's world become clearer as he sang and the "world sang back."

The illustrations of Loren Long are absolutely breathtaking. And Chiro is so adorable! I hope that a plush version is in the works. This book will make a wonderful addition to any collection and will simply delight both young and old.

Cat Nights Book Review

Cat Nights by Jane Manning tells the enchanting tale of a  witch named Felicity. She has just celebrated her 263rd birthday. This means that she now has the ability to change herself into a cat!

After her first transformation, Felicity starts to notice how different the world is through a cat's eyes. She can see better, run faster and smell things she has never smelled before. Being a cat is amazing!

Every night, Felicity experiences something new in her cat form. But, her fun comes at a price. She is  only allowed to turn herself into a cat eight times. On the ninth time, she
will  not be able to turn back into a witch, but will remain a cat forever!

In  an effort to curb her kitty cravings, her loving aunts cast a spell over  Felicity to diminish her desire for the life of a cat. But does their spell do  more harm than good? Will Felicity ever be able to change into a cat  again?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. The layout of the book is  wonderful and the illustrations are fantastic. One truly feels as if they are  out on a moonlight ramble with Felicity in the cool fall air. Children of all  ages will love this non-spooky Halloween tale for years to come.
