Ex-Mas Book Review

9/14/2014

This book chronicles a road trip that takes place between Lila and her ex-boyfriend. The plot is anything but obvious. Especially once Lila's little brother turns up missing...

The characters in this book are very relatable. I soon found myself thinking back on my own ex-boyfriends and if I could have survived such a trip.

Each chapter had me on the edge of my seat. I found myself staying up late saying, "Okay, just ONE more chapter!" I simply could not get enough of this book. In fact, I wanted to start re-reading it the day after I finished it. What a great read!

The Sneetches and Other Stories Book Review

9/14/2014

This has to be one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books. The story unfolds with two types of Sneetches: those with stars on their bellies and those without. The Sneetches with the stars feel that they are better than those without. Until one day, the starless Sneetches find a way to obtain the tummy star and turn the Sneetch world upside down.

Dr. Seuss presents the adult topics of cliques, jealousy and the need to belong in such a beautifylly simplistic way that children of all ages will easily be able to understand. The illustrations are wonderful, as always. In fact, I think that businesses should incorporate this story into their employee handbooks and manuals!

The Tao of Pooh Book Review

Much like its companion book , The Te of Piglet, this book takes a deeper look at the lovable, clumsy character that is Winnie-the-Pooh.

The author does an amazing job of delving into Pooh's psyche and proves that there is more that makes this bear tick than just honey. While the content includes much deeper thinking than Pooh has ever done, the author manages to make the text witty and insightful.

While reading this book, I kept a journal and wrote down all of my favorite quotes and thoughts. I was even inspired to write down some of my own ideas.

Whether you are a Winnie-the-Pooh fan or just someone who likes to think outside the box, this book is a perfect read for you!

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs Book Review

9/14/2014

I will never forget the day that my grade school teacher read this book to the class. I remember thinking, "That's not the real story!" But, as she continued, I really began to love the interpretation.

"The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" is supposedly the "true" story of the three little pigs as told by none other than the wolf. This is the first book to ever turn the tables and allow the antagonist to tell his/her side of the story. Of course the wolf blames all of his huffing and puffing on allergies that are only aggravated by his neighbors, the pigs.

With comical illustrations and humorous storytelling, this book is sure to become a children's classic for years to come.

Audrey, Wait!  Book Review

This book blew me away! I literally could not put it down! Audrey decides that it is time to break up with her rocker boyfriend. Soon after, her ex writes a song entitled "Audrey, Wait!" that instantly becomes a hit!

Audrey is faced with sudden fame (the paparazzi are everywhere!) and hatred from everyone who is taking her ex's side. Her world continues to crumble as her ex's band embarks on a tour and gives a very intimate interview on a national morning television show.

I found myself really routing for Audrey as she navigates her way through high school, the break up and fame while still keeping her part time job. And the ending was a wonderful surprise that will be enjoyed by all.

Meet Felicity Book Review

I fell in love with Felicity upon reading this book! In "Meet Felicity," the reader is introduced to a bright, headstrong young girl living in colonial 1774.

Felicity soon discovers a beautiful horse named Penny. What Felicity had not bargained for was Penny's cruel owner. Determined to save Penny, Felicity takes matters into her own hands.

I loved all of the action in the story. Plus, the illustrations are absolutely beautiful! And I especially love the glossary in the back of the book that contains words that some young readers may not yet have come across. Perhaps, what I liked the best was reading the book to my Felicity doll.

Skippyjon Jones Book Review

I absolutely LOVE Skippyjon Jones! Probably because I am the proud dog mom of three beautiful Chihuahuas.

In Judy Schachner's debut, we meet Skippyjon Jones, a Siamese cat who thinks he is a Chihuahua. His momma is constantly trying to teach him how to be a proper cat, but, Skippyjon would rather spend his days pretending.

While playing in his room, Skippyjon manages to bounce from his bed into his closet. Once inside, he is transported to a magical world filled with Chihuahuas that need his help. Can Skippyjon save the day?

I remember falling in love with Skippyjon and sharing this story with a kids club that I visit with my therapy dog. The children laughed the entire time. Skippyjon is a fun character that children and adults of all ages will love.

Jillian On Her Toes Book Review

I absolutely loved the Ballet School book series! I think it helped that I was taking ballet lessons at that time as well.

Jillian has just moved to the area with her family. She is used to her old life, friends, and most importantly, her old dance class. Jillian does not feel challenged in her new class and is still having trouble making friends.

All Jillian can seem to talk about is the way that her life used to be. When the other girls see Jillian as a bragard, trouble ensues. Will Jillian ever be able to fit in?

This book was just as delightful of a read as the first book. I would recommend it to young readers, especially those that are enrolled in a dance class as they will be able to relate to the situations.

A Very Scary Witch Story Book Review

This is one of my favorite children's books of all time! I remember getting so excited around Halloween because that is when my parents would read this story to me. And when I got old enough to read it myself, I hardly put it down the entire month of October!

"A Very Scary Witch Story" is the tale of a young witch who is afraid of Halloween! She worries that she will not be scary enough to carry out her responsibilities as a witch. Soon, she is flying high atop a magic broom with her trusty black cat at the helm.

I loved turning off the lights and looking at the glow-in-the-dark pictures! Plus, as a person who does not like scary movies, I really loved the fact that there are fun Halloween stories out there for young and old alike to enjoy.
